Step inside the Archive: BFI Replay and the Media Archive for Central England

2 February @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Free

To celebrate the launch of BFI Replay across Birmingham Libraries join us for this unique, free event exploring the archives and collaborative work of the British Film Institute (BFI) and the Media Archive for Central England (MACE).

You will hear archival insights from the BFI and MACE, watch local highlights from BFI Replay itself and the event will close with a special screening from MACE of Reclaiming the City, which was first broadcast on Central TV on 11 October 1984 as part of the channel’s environmental series, Eco, which investigated issues ranging from acid rain through to fossil fuels; issues that remain hot topics 40 years on. Reclaiming the City reflects on Birmingham City Council’s post-war “knock it down and start again” approach to redevelopment. The film argues that by learning from these past mistakes, future schemes—such as the proposed International Convention Centre and the Gas Street Basin developments—could steer clear of similar pitfalls.

BFI Replay is a free-to-access, digital archive uncovering stories from across the UK, its history and its people and is available exclusively in UK public libraries.
