Ministry of Housing confirms i9 building for new Wolverhampton regional HQ

The Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government has confirmed the location of its new West Midlands base.

The government department announced in February that it had chosen Wolverhampton for a new regional HQ and ministerial office.

It has now announced that the operation will be housed over two floors in the i9 building next to the city’s railway station, with an initial target of 150 staff to be based there.

Both senior civil servants and ministers will be on site, making it the first such office outside of the capital with a regular ministerial presence, and it is due to open during the summer.

The wider West Midlands is expected to be home to at least 500 staff from the Ministry for Housing by 2025, adding to the 300 already working here.

Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick said: “I’m pleased to announce the i9 building will be our new home in Wolverhampton and look forward to opening the office later this year.

“This department is leading the effort to level up every corner of the country so it is absolutely right that we bring decision making to the heart of the communities we serve.

“I hope that this vote of confidence in Wolverhampton helps the city to attract other employees and further investment.”
